Discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community affects the safety, opportunities, and human rights of people around the world. If you are feeling anxious about your own safety, here are some ways to protect yourself.
Keep up to date with laws and policies
Understanding your rights isn’t just about feeling safe - it’s also about feeling like you matter, and having control over your own life. Make sure you know your legal rights in all sorts of situations – from employment, housing, and healthcare, to interactions with law enforcement. Keep up to date with local laws and policies, and do your research if you’re travelling abroad, as LGBTQ+ policies and social attitudes differ around the world.
Do your research before travelling
Before you travel, it’s important to research your destination thoroughly. Look into legal restrictions and social attitudes, and consider seeking advice from LGBTQ+ travel forums and agencies that specialize in inclusive travel. Don’t just look at the country overall - research all the places you’re planning to visit, as policies and public attitudes can differ between regions of the same country. Many destinations are known for being LGBTQ+-friendly, and with some thoughtful planning and awareness, you can enjoy a safe and memorable trip.
Look after yourself at events
Pride month is one of the best times to connect with the queer community, with parades and parties happening all over the world. That said, it’s important to take safety precautions when you’re attending large-scale events. If you can, stay with a friend or group, especially if you’re going to be out after dark. Let your loved ones know when and where you’re going, and check in with them before and after the event. If you feel unsafe, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation. Make sure you and your friends know where the exits are so you can leave quickly if necessary, and arrange meeting points to use if you or anyone else gets separated from the group.
Stay safe online
While the internet provides vital spaces for community building and support, many people within the LGBTQ+ community experience online harassment and cyberbullying. Here are some ways that you can keep yourself safe online: Regularly review and adjust your privacy settings on social media. Limit your audience to people you trust, and be mindful of what you post and who might be able to see it. Don’t hesitate to block people who engage in harassment or hate speech, and report abusive or discriminatory content to the platform. If you experience online harassment, reach out to trusted friends, family, or support organizations. If you’re looking for more tips, lots of LGBTQ+ organizations offer resources and advice about online safety.
Build a strong support network
A strong support system is crucial for your mental health and wellbeing, and it can be a valuable source of comfort, safety, and acceptance when the wider world feels challenging or unwelcoming. Build your social network by finding out what’s happening in your local queer community, joining groups related to your interests, and discovering LGBTQ+ events in your area. If being openly queer isn’t an option for you, online communities can help you to feel seen and supported.
